On 2nd April 2025, World Autism Day, we’re celebrating Daniel Kim, a talented artist and tech enthusiast who continues to make incredible strides towards his life goals.
Daniel attends art sessions with Studio Arts in the morning and Tech Guru sessions in the afternoon as part of his routine. This structured time helps him manage anxiety and regulate his emotions. A few years ago, Daniel struggled to stay at Tech Guru for more than 30 minutes—now he stays for an hour and is in fully engaged.
While Daniel is comfortable with basic IT usage, he has faced challenges with unintended online payments, mobile data management, and device issues. The Tech Guru sessions allow him to practice monitoring these aspects and build confidence in his digital independence.
In the past 12 months, Daniel has started to transition into living independently, from his family home, and into a unit in Chatwood with an existing flatmate, Valentino. Daniel now lives with Valentino 2 days a week and the goal is to be there 3 days a week by the end of this year. It has been challenging for him to live in a new place without his family. The transition process is being supported by his family and with formal supports from his NDIS plan and is going slowly in response to Daniel’s needs. Daniel and Valentino have been getting along well. They have been organising get togethers and are spending time with each other. We are also seeing a more relaxed Daniel as he spends time getting to know Chatswood and his new local neighbourhood. As part of this transition, the Tech Guru sessions have helped him set up his internet, smart TV, and Nintendo device—important steps toward managing his own space.
Beyond his daily routine, Daniel is an award-winning artist! He was named a finalist in the 2023 Archibald Prize for his captivating self-portrait, a touching tribute to his mentor and friend, Greg Warburton. You can read more about his achievement here: https://lnkd.in/gvQmbHbN
