This World Down Syndrome Day, we’re proud to share the heartwarming story of Kate, Rob, and Sandy — a true reflection of friendship, inclusion, and community at The Housing Connection. 💛
For the past 9 years, Sandy has been living in Chatswood with Kate and Rob, both of whom live with Down syndrome. What began as sharing a home has grown into a deep and meaningful bond that feels like family.
"My oldest friend lives with cerebral palsy. I never saw him as different to me, we simply shared the same interests. That’s how I see Kate and Rob too,” Sandy shares.
Together, they enjoy music, classic rock, The Beatles, and theatre shows. Every Christmas and Easter is spent together, exchanging gifts and making memories just like any family would.
Living with Kate and Rob has also been life-changing for Sandy. She describes how they’ve helped her come out of her shell, attend social events, and build new friendships.
Over the years, she’s seen incredible growth in both of them. Kate’s independence has blossomed — from going home twice a week to now only once, feeling secure and more confident. Rob’s communication has flourished, becoming more conversational and thoughtful.
"One day I was sick, and I overheard Rob telling his Social Educator that he was going to buy me dinner because I wasn’t well. Moments like that are so touching, and it’s why I love living with them," Sandy says.
Of course, there are challenges too. Rob is strict with his routines and can get upset when things don’t go to plan. After the loss of his father, the household has become even more mindful, offering extra hugs and care.
Kate faces health issues as well, and Sandy, along with the THC support network, ensures she has the care and attention she needs. “It’s definitely not the same as living with regular flatmates,” Sandy reflects, “it comes with responsibility, but it’s all part of our close bond.”
The Housing Connection forms part of a strong support network for Kate and Rob. With the help of Social Educators and family members, they attend birthday parties, social gatherings, and community events — building lasting friendships.
Recently, they celebrated Rob’s birthday, surrounded by friends like Lisa, Paul, and Michael — a beautiful example of the inclusive, supportive community they are part of.
"I am so happy to have met Kate and Rob. I feel like they are my extended family," Sandy says with a smile.
