Mandatory registration for SIL & Support Coordination providers

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Quality and Safeguards Commission is moving towards mandatory registration for platform providers, Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers, and support coordinators. This initiative aims to enhance service quality and ensure participant safety within the NDIS framework.

The transition to mandatory registration is due to start from 1 July 2025.

The Housing Connection is a registered provider for both Support Coordination and Supported Independent Living and is accepting referrals. The Housing Connection is supportive of mandatory registration to increase regulatory oversight and to prevent the exploitation, abuse and neglect of people with disability.

The move to mandatory registration for support coordinators stems from the NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission's Own Motion Inquiry into Support Coordination and Plan Management. The inquiry highlighted that effective support coordination promotes participant choice and control but also identified issues related to integrity, conflicts of interest, and coercion.

While most SIL providers are already registered, it's not currently mandatory. Concerns from the Commission’s Own Motion Inquiry into supported accommodation, the Disability Royal Commission, and other inquiries have highlighted risks associated with unregistered providers operating in closed settings, which can lead to abuse and neglect. Additionally, participants in SIL often have larger plan budgets, making them vulnerable to exploitation.
