Mannix’s 27-Year Journey: The Impact of Quality Support

Quality care through our services is an integral part of our strategic goals, and we recognise it’s far from a one-off commitment. For many of our participants the path to a better quality of life can belong, with many obstacles along the way.
Rather than be deterred by these challenges, THC is committed to building relationships with our participants that span years and sometimes even decades.
Mannix’s journey with THC is the perfect example. He’s been part of our network of support for 27 years and has seen the organisation grow and the disability sector go through some major changes, such as the NDIS being implemented in 2016.
A long-time resident, living in Willoughby, Mannix is well acquainted with our team and the support we offer.
As Mannix’s challenges became more pronounced, it became apparent he could no longer live on his own. Grissom, a co-tenant (and now part-time Social Educator), moved in with Mannix several years ago and a wonderful and supportive friendship has blossomed.
“Living with Mannix has been deeply fulfilling and rewarding. He loves watching movies and listening to music at home, and he is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about films, music, actors, actresses, and musicians. Mannix shares this knowledge with me daily. For example, if you ask him about Superman, he'll tell you all the actors who have played the role and the years they did so,” Grissom said.
“Mannix is also a language enthusiast, speaking French, Armenian, and English fluently. He often shows curiosity about other languages, frequently asking me how to say certain words in my language.
For people with complex needs like Mannix, navigating other people’s emotions and concerns can be quite tricky, which heavily impacts social skills. However, Mannix has shown that with the right support network, you can really achieve some significant personal growth.
Mannix loves the barbeques and social options provided at THC and comes for sausage sizzles at social events. He also loves coming into the office to have a cup of coffee.“I like all the staff here; they are doing a great job. They are always very nice to me. I love Nicola, Anne Louise, Katerina, and Victoria. They are very respectful, supportive and help me whenever I ask for it,” Mannix said.
Other than improved social skills, Mannix has also become more responsible with cleanliness. He showers regularly, especially when prompted by Grissom or other Social Educators, and often takes the initiative to throw out garbage when leaving the house.
“I see Mannix showing great respect for others and he has a kind heart. He used to watch movies and listen to music at high volumes, but since I moved in, he has been considerate and keeps the volume down to avoid disturbing me,” Grissom says.
Living with a disability presents challenges that many people may not understand, but Mannix’s journey shows the incredible strength of quality support in action.
Despite facing health issues and other complications, he has emerged as a truly inspiring person, proving that our difficulties can shape us into resilient and compassionate individuals.
“Most of the time, it feels like he's the one looking after me, rather than the other way around,” Grissom said. “He cares about me and often asks if I'd like a cup of Coke with him or if I want to share some of his food. He even told me that he wishes I could stay young and happy forever.
“Mannix is an extraordinary intelligent man who not only be friends his team, but he also creates long-lasting relationships with ex staff members who continue to celebrate his special occasions annually with him. He also has a very supportive and loving family who are very connected with Mannix, his flatmate and THC.”–Anne Louise said.
So, what’s next? Mannix dreams of traveling abroad if he were to win the lottery and lose weight. We often discuss the places he wants to visit, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris with his uncle, and he’s excited about the idea of dining at the top. He also hopes to visit New York and Disneyland in California.
