NDIS Plan Funded Supports Explained: Capital Supports Budget
There are three Support Budgets that can be found in NDIS Plans. Today we're reviewing the Capital Supports Budget.
Following on from previous blogs, "NDIS Plan Funded Supports: Introduction", "NDIS Plan Funded Supports: Core Supports Budget", and "NDIS Plan Funded Supports: Capacity Building Budget", we're diving further into the final one of the three Supports Budgets: Capital Supports Budget.
The Capital Supports Budget includes supports for the purchase of higher-cost equipment and modifications. Capital Supports funding can only be used for their specific purpose and cannot be used to pay for anything else.
Within the Capital Supports Budget, you may find one, some or all of the following categories:
- Assistive Technology & Equipment
- Home Modifications
- Vehicle Modifications
- Specialist Disability Accommodation ("SDA")
Let's take a look at each of these categories.
Assistive Technology & Equipment
This category provides for equipment used for mobility, personal care, communication and recreation. Typical things this covers includes:
- Aids or equipment that assist you to live independently
- Aids or equipment that assist a carer to support you
Vehicle Modifications
This category provides for modifications or equipment required to vehicles you use for transportation. Typical things this covers includes:
- Changes to a vehicle that enables you to access it and/or operate it such as an accelerated pedal or hand-assisted driving control system
- The installation of required support equipment into a vehicle
Home Modifications
This category provides for equipment in your residence required to help you live more independently and safely. Typical things this covers includes:
- The design, construction, installation and/or modifications to equipment or non-structural components of the building
- Installation of fixtures or fittings that enable you to live as independently and safely as possible in your home
- These can include ramps, safety rails, lifts, etc
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
This category provides for supports with specialist disability accommodation. Typical things this covers includes:
- The cost of specialist accommodation when there is extreme functional impairment and/or very high support needs
- Example: THC's Supported Independent Living accommodation at William Street in Chatswood
